February 2026 Newsletter

My Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I am grateful to share with you an important update: Mary Mother of God Orphanage is now operating as Mary Mother of God Children’s Foundation. In consultation with my brother priests and village elders during my recent visit, it became clear that our original mission needed expansion. The name “Children’s Foundation” reflects more faithfully the dignity, care, and formation we strive to offer, especially for young children who are not orphans, yet remain deeply at risk in their communities.

From the very beginning, your kindness in sharing my vision to provide children with safety, faith, and family has been a true blessing. Together, when I was blessed to serve at St. Bridget’s alongside Kela and you, our faithful parishioners, we built a home with the hope of housing children in need. Your generosity made it possible to construct a safe and beautiful facility rooted in love and faith.

After prayerful discernment and the wise counsel of local priests and village elders, we have recognized that, at this time, we will not be housing children in the original residential model. Instead, we are expanding the vision so that the house serves as a secure gathering place for teaching, formation, and the overall well-being of vulnerable children and young women. It will remain a place of safety — a place for instruction, mentorship, short stays as needed, and community gatherings centered on faith and human dignity.

We are responding to an urgent need identified by the council: to provide practical trade education that enables young girls and women — including some who are already young mothers — to earn a living and care for themselves and their families. Through the leadership of a master seamstress, nine young women are currently being trained in sewing within this safe environment. This vocational training offers not only skills, but stability, confidence, and hope for a sustainable future. In addition to these nine young women, funding is also supporting thirteen other children by assisting their families directly within their own communities. In our present socioeconomic climate in Ghana, this kind of formation and family-centered support is essential to prevent exploitation, trafficking, and generational poverty.

I realize that this reflects an updated vision from what we originally built together. I share this with humility and transparency, trusting in your understanding and your continued partnership in caring for God’s children. We may one day further collaborate toward onsite youth housing as circumstances allow, but for now, this interim step — guided by prayer and local counsel — is where we are called to serve.

I humbly request your continued prayers and ongoing support. A small monthly gift of $25.00 will help maintain the stability and opportunity these young women and children deserve. I look forward, God willing, to joining you this spring to share personal updates in person. Until then, please feel free to call or email me with your questions or comments. Together, let us continue Mary’s tender mission of lifting God’s children toward a future filled with faith, dignity, and hope.

With gratitude and prayers,
Reverend Godfred Appiah-Marfo, Founder
